Recap: 115th Oregon Amateur Championship, Day 1

By Oregon Golf Association

Day 1 is in the books and one key storyline was the weather as competitors dealt with cool weather and random showers throughout the day. Outside of the weather, the layout demands accuracy off the tee and on approaches as players try to find the appropriate portion of the undulating and tricky greens.

Notables:

Robbie Ziegler of Tualatin fired a 5-under round of 66, opening a two (2) shot lead on the Men’s field. Ziegler recently teamed up with Zach Foushee (2-under, 69 in round 1) at the 9th U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club, earning Medalist honors by tying the 36-hole scoring record (16-under, 126).

Connor Bringhurst of Ridgefield, Washington currently sits at T2 (3-under, 68) after round 1. Bringhurst was the 1st Alternate for the Championship, but got into the field when his brother Cade was unable to play.

Montgomery Ferreira of Bend sits tied atop the leaderboard following and even par round of 71. Ferreira recently completed her Junior year at Notre Dame and recorded four top-30 finishes during the spring.

Sofia Fuenmayor of Beaverton also opened round 1 with an even par 71 to tie for the top spot with Ferreira. Fuenmayor earned 2024 All Big Sky Conference Second Team following her sophomore season at Weber State.

Round 2 of stroke play is underway with the top 64 Men and top 32 Women advancing to match play.
