Recap: 114th Oregon Amateur Championship, Day 2+

By Oregon Golf Association

Day 2+ of the championship is complete and the match play brackets are set. Weather wasn’t as big of a factor as Day 1, but the firm, fast, and tough conditions continue to be demanding on competitors. That said, good shots are being rewarded which was evident as defending women’s champ Victoria Gailey fired a championship best 8-under 64 that included 10 birdies and Spencer Tibbits shot a 6-under 65 to claim the 3-seed in the Men’s championship.

Men’s Championship Notables:

  • Craig Ronne continued his solid play during day 2, shooting a 2-under 69 to lock up the #1 seed at 7-under par. He was closely followed by Naoki Easterday, who shot a 2nd round 67 to earn the #2 seed.
  • There was an 8 for 4 matchplay for the final spots in the match play. The playoff only lasted one hole as Jack Rodewald, Tyson Campbell, Bryce Thomason, and Brandon Mater all advanced with par or better.
  • The cut line of 157 is two strokes higher than last year, which was not surprise to organizers. When comparing the course rating between Wilamette Valley Country Club and the Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge this is in line with expectations.

Women’s Championship Notables:

  • As previously mentioned, Victoria Gailey’s blistering round of 8-under 64 earned her the #1 seed in match play.
  • Amanda Jacobs and Alexa Udom finished at 6-over par for their two-day total, ultimately trailing the #1 seed by 8 strokes throughout match play.

It’s also important to note that the 40th Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur Championship gets started today. The field of 24 plays stroke play today to determine the championship bracket of 16, but defending champ Lara Tennant automatically qualifies into match play portion of the event.
