Recap: 114th Oregon Amateur Championship, Day 1

By Oregon Golf Association

Day 1 is in the books and one key storyline was the weather. Competitors dealt with showers on and off throughout the day, especially a big rain shower that slowed play and saturated the greens.

Outside of the weather, the course really showed its teeth as greens were running at ~12.5 on the stimpmeter. Despite the rain, a few difficult greens and tough hole locations game some players a fit. The layout demands accuracy and rewards length, which is evident as the leaderboard starts to take place.

Notables:

Craig Ronne of Klamath Falls, Oregon opened a three (3) shot lead on the Men’s field, firing a 5-under round of 66. Craig played for the UO Men’s Golf team and recently led the team in scoring average during his senior season. Eric Fiskum currently sits T2, 2-under and has previous Oregon Amateur history at Pumpkin Ridge - Witch Hollow, finishing Runner-up here in 2005 losing to Alex Stamey in the finals.

Franca Polla of Portland, Oregon leads the Women’s Championship by one (1) after shooting an opening round of 73 to put her at 1-over par. She just wrapped her Junior season on the Boise State Women’s golf team and was only one of three players to appear in all 10 events for the Broncos this season. Hannah Swanson trails by one (1) after an opening 74 puts her at 2-over par. Hannah is no stranger to OGA events, having won the 2012 Oregon Golf Association Junior Player of the Year.
