By Oregon Golf Association

Founded in 1899, Eugene Country Club (ECC) holds a distinguished place in Oregon's golfing history as one of the state’s oldest courses. Located in the heart of Eugene, ECC has undergone several transformations over the years, evolving into a premier golf destination known for its meticulously maintained course, rich traditions, and prestigious tournaments.

Eugene-Country-Club-Hole-5Course Design and Evolution
Eugene Country Club was originally designed as a modest 9-hole course, but in 1923, H. Chandler Egan, a well-known golfer and architect, was enlisted to redesign it. Egan, famous for his work on other Oregon courses like Oswego Lake and Eastmoreland, expanded ECC to 18 holes, bringing his signature blend of strategic bunkering, undulating greens, and natural landscapes to the layout. In 1967, the course underwent another transformation when famed architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. was brought in to modernize Egan’s design. Jones re-routed several holes, enhanced the course's playability, and added to its aesthetic appeal, further cementing ECC’s status as one of Oregon’s premier courses.

Today, Eugene Country Club is known for its towering fir trees, narrow fairways, and fast greens, creating a challenging yet rewarding experience for golfers of all levels. Its blend of classic design elements and modern updates provides a seamless balance between tradition and innovation.

Host of Prestigious Tournaments
Eugene Country Club has long been a favored venue for major tournaments, including the U.S. Women’s Amateur and multiple NCAA Championships. The club has also hosted the U.S. Senior Men’s Amateur, further solidifying its reputation as a top competitive venue. Its championship-caliber course consistently draws elite golfers, offering a challenging yet fair test of skill.

One of the most notable events in the club's history was hosting the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships, where the country's top collegiate golfers competed on the lush fairways of ECC. The club's ability to host prestigious tournaments underscores its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of course conditions and facilities.
