A legendary streak reached a new milestone at the 43rd Oregon Senior Women's Amateur Championship at Riverside Golf & Country Club. The week delivered championship-caliber competition and a familiar name standing tallest at the end: Lara Tennant, who captured her 10th consecutive title, completing a full decade of dominance and extending one of the most remarkable streaks in Oregon Golf Association history.
Stroke Play Qualifying:
As the nine-time defending champion, Lara Tennant bypassed stroke play qualifying and entered the match play bracket as the #2 seed.
Medalist honors went to Karen Garcia, who posted a 77 (+5) highlighted by two birdies on the front nine and a steady finish — making par on the final seven holes to cruise to a two-stroke margin over the next closest competitors. Her performance set the tone for what would be a competitive week from top to bottom.
Cappy Mack and Katy Wright each carded a 79 (+7) in qualifying to earn the #3 and #4 seeds, respectively, rounding out the top of the bracket heading into match play.
First Round Match Play:
With the field of 16 set, match play got underway and the top seeds wasted little time making their presence felt.
#1 seed Karen Garcia picked up right where she left off in qualifying, advancing with a commanding 6&5 victory over Chris Oviatt. #2 seed Lara Tennant was equally dominant, dropping just one hole in her match and cruising to an 8&6 victory over Chung Ching Ng to advance comfortably to the quarterfinals.
One of the notable results of the first round came from #11 seed Loree McKay, who knocked off #6 seed Mary Budke, an eight-time Oregon Amateur Champion, with a 1-up victory clinched on the 18th hole.
Quarterfinals:
The quarterfinal round tightened things up considerably, with several closely contested matches throughout the day.
Top seed Karen Garcia's strong week came to an end as Anita Rosemeyer edged her in a back-and-forth battle that required 19 holes to determine a winner. Cindy Davis followed up her first-round win with a sharp 4&3 victory over Katy Wright to punch her ticket to the semifinals.
Lara Tennant faced a stern test from Rosie Cook, with both players trading holes on the front nine. Tennant ultimately asserted herself to secure a 3&1 victory. Cappy Mack and Loree McKay were locked in a tight match through 14 holes before Mack pulled away, winning the 15th, 16th, and 17th holes to advance with a 3&1 win of her own.
Semifinals:
The semifinals produced two compelling matches, each with its own storyline.
Anita Rosemeyer found herself down early against Cindy Davis, trailing through the first four holes before rattling off wins on holes 5 through 9 to take a commanding 4-up lead at the turn. Davis responded with wins on the 12th and 13th holes to make things interesting, but Rosemeyer steadied herself and closed out the match with wins on the 14th and 15th for a 4&3 victory and a spot in the final.
Lara Tennant faced a familiar opponent in Cappy Mack, and the match lived up to the billing. Tennant held a 1-up lead through nine holes in a well-fought contest before pulling away on the back nine, winning the 14th and 16th holes to advance with a 3&1 victory and set up a date with Rosemeyer in the final.
Seeking her 10th consecutive title, Lara Tennant was at her best when it mattered most. She came out firing against Anita Rosemeyer, not dropping a single hole throughout the match. Tennant held a 5-up lead at the turn and wasted no time on the back nine, winning the 10th and 11th holes before halving the 12th to seal a 7&6 victory and complete a historic run.
Ten consecutive Oregon Senior Women's Amateur Championships. A full decade of dominance. Congratulations to Anita Rosemeyer on a terrific tournament, and to Lara Tennant for continuing to write her name into the record books.
